The Client:
Professional Veterinary Products Ltd. (PVPL) is one of the largest animal health products distributors in the U.S., with a catalog of more than 27,000 products. Founded in 1982 as a small group of veterinarians wanting to increase buying power, PVPL has grown into a shareholder-network of more than 2,000 independent practices with 5,000 practitioners.

The Challenge:

• Establish data warehouse and web-based data
• Decentralize data entry and report generation
• Automate report generation

In the past, sales and reporting data for PVPL’s administrative staff and 25 Regional Managers around the nation were created manually from queries against the company’s mainframe systems. Standardized reports were built from the Omaha central office, requiring a full-time staff member who did little else. If Regional Managers needed updates or special reports, they had to ask for them to be generated.

PVPL needed a data warehouse solution using technologies that best fit the company’s needs, and one that would deliver web-based sales and reporting data with ready access for its Regional Managers and staff.

The Solution:

• MicroStrategy platform deployed
• Processes implemented for decentralized data loading
• MicroStrategy reporting interface developed

Through a MicroStrategy platform, Jelecos migrated the company’s extensive mainframe database to a data warehouse, and helped validate the veracity of the data. Jelecos wrote processes that allowed data to be loaded remotely on a nightly basis. And, deployment and development of a MicroStrategy reporting interface provides shared information across the client’s network of regional representatives and central office personnel.

Regional Managers and central office staff now can run their own standard or specialized reports—most constructed in matter of minutes. PVPL has been so satisfied with its data warehousing and recovery performance, the company is expanding its platform to cover financial reporting. Showing its flexibility, Jelecos not only develops PVP’s business intelligence systems, it also hosts PVP’s entire infrastructure.
